AFTER THE MATCH BORSIGPLATZ Black and yellow flags are part of the inventory here. The heart of Borussia beats at Borsigplatz and not only when the celebration parade passes by thousands of ecstatic fans after the team wins a championship or the cup. Starting the parade near Borsigplatz is one of the BVB’s traditions. The Borsigplatz area is home to the bar in which the club was founded. Where ‘Pommes rotweiß’ (fries with ketchup and mayonnaise) are served today was once the site of Gaststätte Wildschütz, where 18 young men came together on 19 December 1909 to found a football club. The name comes from an advertising sign for the Borussia brewery, which was located in the north of the city until 1901. Many of the founders of BVB lived around Borsigplatz, played football in the Weiße Wiese park, the site of the current Hoeschpark with the Stockheide open-air swimming pool. In the Dreifaltigkeitskirche (Trinity Church) on Flurstrasse, a few good kicks of a football from Borsigplatz, the exhibition ‘Church, Football, Faith in God’ documents the story of BVB’s founding and the relationship to the community. Borsigplatz also marks the start of the ‘Walk of Fame’, which remembers 100 special events and people from the history of BVB and leads right across the city centre to the stadium. Borsigplatz, crated at the end of the 19th century as a traffic hub in the north of Dortmund, is named for industrialist August Albert Borsig, who ran a machinery factory nearby. Many beautifully restored Wilhelminian buildings dominate the square and the Borsigplatz district. 5 BVB GEHT AUS 65
