Heute existiert hier wieder viel Gastronomie. Wenn große nationale und internationale BVB-Spiele anstehen, ist er der entscheidende Ort für die Pre-Game-Party. „Wer heute einen Zirkel von einem Kilometer rund um den Alten Markt zieht, der umkreist somit weit über 1000 Freiluftplätze“, beschreibt Pfefferkorn-Wirt Andreas Panzau die Lage. Fast der ganze Platz ist bestuhlt, ein wunderbarer Anblick an hellen Tagen, gerne mit sehr viel „Schwarzgelb“ an Fußball-Feiertagen, doch auch die Gästefans kommen gern hierher. Moderne Wirtshäuser sind es vor allem, doch aus einer einstigen rein bierorientierten Gastronomie ist eine speisenbasierte Gastronomie (gerade auch für Biertrinker) geworden. That has always been true since the good old days. Now there are lots of restaurants, cafés and bars here again. For big national and international BVB games, it is where the pre-game party kicks off. “If you walk in a one kilometre circle around the Alter Markt (Old Market Square), you pass far more than 1000 open air squares,” sums up Andreas Panzau, manager of the Pfefferkorn restaurant. Almost the entire square is filled with seating, making it a wonderful sight on sunny days, especially when its full of black and yellow on football holidays, but even fans of visiting teams love to come here. Most are modern inns, but have progressed from their formerly beer-centric orientation to a more food-based approach (with menus catering particularly to beer drinkers).
